On the 31 March 2021, Mr. Thomas , the liaison officer of Royal Canadian Mounted Police High Commission of Canada(RCMP) made a courtesy visit to the ASEANAPOL Secretariat(AS) and was accompanied by Madam Anna Lee (Program Assistant) RCMP liaison officer in Kuala Lumpur High Commission of Canada. The delegation were greeted by the Directors and staff members of ASEANAPOL and accompanied to the meeting room.
The Executive Director (ED) of ASEANAPOL DAC Jim Wee later briefly introduced the Director for police services Snr. Supt Joni Getamala, Director for Plans and Programmes Supt Tang Yik Tung, Head of Administrative Technical Staff Supt Azrul Hisham Mohd Shaffei and other Administrative and Technical Staff members of ASEANAPOL. A short brief was given on the roles, functions and tasks of the Secretariat with a brief AS Corporate video were also being displayed. ED shared that currently the Secretariat is venturing into promoting its role to strengthen the regional networking through transnational crime such as hosting a project in helping and assisting AMCs locating fugitive as well as other form of assistance within the role and function of AS.
During the discussion, Mr.Thomas acknowledged that he is a new liaison officer for RCMP based in Malaysia, replacing his college whose tenure has expired early this year. He acknowledged that RCPM is emphasizing on the importance to give focus on the campaign against serious crime, cyber crime and human trafficking as well as looking forward to have a further discussion on the said matters with AS in a separate meeting soon. He also acknowledged that working together with AS would further encourage sharing of information, strengthening collaboration to keep the Southeast Asian Region safe. He acknowledged that RCPM would also like to offer trainings especially in cyber crime investigations area as it is a new crime trends and challenges that the AMCs is facing currently.
The one hour visit ended with photo session and exchange of mementos between the ASEANAPOL Secretariat Executive Director DAC Jim Wee and Mr. Thomas. The meeting was conducted in a conducive environment indeed fruitful and both parties are looking forward for a better working relationship in the near future.
